Songs of Field and Garden

Tarmac Encounter

Could you illustrate this poem?

Tarmac Encounter.

A swoop and a dash where the water falls,

Hops on a rock with a dip of the head,

A nod at the woman washing her smalls,

Tail wags –

A jump and a flash - an appointment calls,

In barely a second, he’s in the reedbed.

Watching the tail, with hope for good fortune,

Nine wags for luck, not more, and not less,

Dressed for the evening, nodding “good afternoon,”

black and white –

He’s solo by day, but the night will come soon,

By streetlight’s bright glow, let the trip coalesce.

A morning commuter catching a train,

As one leaves the flock for a day alone,

Black and white strides across the grey plain,

Quick steps –

One scanning the ground, the other his phone,

Two creatures adapted to share this terrain.

I am building a collection of 42 illustrated poems for a planned book "Songs of Field and Garden", a bringing together of natural history, folklore and illustration.

I have 37 completed poems and 28 completed illustrations but still need one or two artists to draw/paint the remaining birds.

If you would like to collaborate on this exciting project comment here or drop me a pm.
